The Starfall® I'm Reading app offers a selection of activities from Starfall.com, serving as the fourth step in Starfall’s complimentary Learn-to-Read sequence. It aims to support children in transitioning from learning to read to reading for comprehension.
Targeting beginning and advancing readers, Starfall I’m Reading focuses on enhancing comprehension and reading fluency. The app features stories with a controlled vocabulary set, emphasizing words commonly found in reading materials. By incorporating high-frequency words, or “sight words,” within sentences, the app helps young readers establish a meaningful connection with each word, aiding in memory retention.
Furthermore, the stories within the app are narrated to showcase fluent reading qualities like intonation, expression, inflection, and rate. Users have the option to utilize the AutoRead feature or audio buttons to enhance fluency when AutoRead is turned off.
Key features of the app include:
- Plays, Fiction/NonFiction, Comics, Folk Tales, Greek Myths, and Chinese Fables sourced from the Starfall website.
- Utilization of a controlled vocabulary focused on frequently encountered words in print.
- An AutoRead feature to demonstrate fluent reading, which can be deactivated once the child attains independent reading skills.
